While the pressmen were on strike against William Randolph Hearst and the Chicago Newspaper Frank O. Carlson was earning wages with E.M. Bornhoft & Co. Eighteen years later Frank wanted to try and broaden his horizon by working for himself installing chalkboard and hand-lettering office doors after office door around the Loop. Frank wanted to keep the printing business in existence from the great depression, so he partnered up with his former boss Eugene Bornhoft and bought E.M. Bornhoft in 1951.
